80th Birthday Trombone Toronto Maple Leaf Cookies

Birthdays are not always easy - finding the perfect gift is so often a challenge, especially in this world where there is no shortage of "things".  Kim saw a facebook post of hockey jersey cookies and suddenly she had the perfect gift idea for her husband's uncle.  A tribute to his love of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and an acknowledgement to his musical ability on the trombone were included in this delicious set!

Tuesday Tips - How to Prevent Cookies from Spreading

Today's Tuesday Tip discusses the challenge of spreading cookies.  Here is just one of my tips to prevent that:

"Chill and rest your dough."

I have tried many different techniques to prevent my dough from spreading, the most radical one being altering my recipe.  That was a disaster I will tell you about another day.  Today I will discuss chilling and resting your dough.

After rolling out my dough between two pieces of parchment, I remove the top piece of parchment, cut my shapes and slide the entire slab of dough onto a cookie sheet.  I chill for a minimum of one hour before separating the shapes and baking.

I have heard from more than one baker that they chill their dough, then roll it out and cut their shapes.  That seems counter-intuitive to me - then aren't you trying to roll super cold/hard dough?  I have excellent results rolling then chilling.  Try it next time and let me know if you chill and rest, either before or after rolling.

Pittsburgh Penquins' Sidney Crosby Hockey Jersey Cookies

Sidney Crosby is Jayce's idol, so Crosby hockey jersey cookies were the perfect addition for the loot bag for all of his friends at his 8th birthday party!  I "girl-ified" a couple of the cookies for the girls in attendance too.

Road Bike Cookies

Ann asked me to create cookies for her road cycling group.  Riding together must be therapeutic for them as they jokingly refer to the group as "Cycle Therapy" (say that out loud to get the full effect :) ).

New Year's Resolutions

As another year comes to a close, most of us are spending some time thinking about their resolutions for next year.  I certainly entertain some every year, not that I am very good at keeping them.

This year I have created some resolutions for Sweet Handmade.  Here is what I am trying to make better for the year ahead.

1.  I will buy no cookie cutters in 2014.  Okay, this one is about as achievable as resolving to never eat chocolate again, but I am setting my goals high.

2.  I will be a better blogger.  I love to tell stories, but I admit I tend to neglect this blog, resorting to Facebook for the every day stuff.

3.  Post more often (on all of my social media accounts - Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Flickr and this blog), especially the behind the scenes stuff that seems to get the most response.

4.  Learn to turn it off - the computer, that is!  I have the terrible problem of "procrastination" and I admit to spending time on useless things online and then having to work into the evening to finish orders.

5.  Ask for help when needed - this is probably my biggest challenge.  There are times help is the only way I can finish an order, whether it is hiring someone to help in the Sweet Handmade kitchen or asking my family to pitch in with meals and household chores, I have to improve this area!

I hope you are successful in any resolutions you make.  I am going to go out this morning and enjoy one last workout at the gym before it becomes packed with those who put "exercise" on their resolutions list!  Happy New Year!

Ball Hockey Tournament Cookies

How can you easily spot a non-Canadian?  They use the term "ice hockey".  In Canada, hockey is played on the ice, we don't need to make that distinction!  Now, if hockey is played on the pavement in the off-season with a ball instead of a puck, you had better describe it as "ball hockey".  And that is what some local hockey players were doing this past weekend now that their regular hockey season is over.  They are great players, but what secret did they have in their back pockets to help them win the tournament played in London, Ontario?  Some Sweet Handmade ball hockey cookies, of course!

Farmers' Market Season

I am in my final prep for the Bradford Farmers' Market which starts tomorrow.  I am one of the organizers, so if something goes wrong, you know who to blame - but I won't take responsibility for the cool weather or the wind!  I hope to see many familiar faces and even more new ones.

Baby Shower Cookies

My lovely niece gave birth to a beautiful little girl in February and  I made this set of cookies for her.  It reminds me of the embroidered baby announcements I had hanging up in my room when I was a little girl, announcing the date and time of my birth, as well as my length and my weight.  This set was inspired by a baby announcement I found at invitesbaby.com.  Now we know all those secrets about Imogen Lily!  Welcome to the world, little sweetie!
